Chapter 26

monday afternoon, Kat heard a sharp knock and looked up from the motion she was editing for court to see Cassie peek her head around her office door. “It’s gaining speed and they’re now predicting landfall tomorrow at about five in the evening, right about rush hour. You might want to take a look.”

“Shit,” Kat replied. She picked up the remote and clicked on the television built into her office wall.

Cassie made herself comfortable on the white leather sofa Kat had bought for herself to celebrate her promotion. After listening to the weather bunny do her best to use the big words necessary to convey the path and speed of the approaching hurricane, Kat got up and went back to her desk. “Contact all our managers on the East Coast. Set a conference call for one hour from now. I don’t care where they are or what they’re doing. Attendance on the call is not an option. Trigger our disaster-response protocol and let them know the call is phase one. They need to be prepared to discuss their respective protocols for each of their buildings.”

“Got it. I’ll let you know when they’re all on line.”

Cassie turned to leave, but Kat stopped her. “Also, print the protocols and bring them to me, so I have them for the call. Call our vendors and make sure they’re tracking this. Get confirmation from each of them by the time of our call, that we have their guarantee that they will get to our buildings first if anything happens. If we’re not first on their list, we better be second, and I’ll want to know why we’re not first.”

“Got it. Anything else?”

“Yes.” Kat sat at her desk and held up the brief she had been working on. “This needs to be filed today. Give me another fifteen minutes with it. No more. Then get it out of my hands and on file with the court.”

“Got it.” Cassie was almost out the door when Kat stopped her again.

“One more thing.” Kat dug in her purse and pulled out some cash. “A large cappuccino and something chocolate, please. Get whatever you want as well. I have a feeling we’ll be here a while.”

As soon as Cassie shut the door, Kat opened her live webcams of Fontaine Development’s buildings. Kat then pulled up the satellite maps on her second screen and zeroed in on the first four Fontaine properties in Hurricane Ileana’s path.

Fontaine Development owned twelve high-rise buildings located along the East Coast, beginning in Southern Florida and stretching to Atlantic City and the boardwalk in New Jersey. Five were hotels in various stages of development, which Fontaine would keep and have managed by an outside group. The other buildings were finished and consisted of three hotels and four mixed commercial and residential buildings.

Hurricane Ileana was over the Caribbean and gaining speed. The computer-generated path projected her making landfall in Miami first and then turning and traveling right up the coast. Kat emailed
